Find Out How Google views your site? -Google Webmaster Tools

The best way to achieve a high ranking in Google is to find out how Googlebot views your site so that you can make regular tweaking and optimizing to your web pages.

Google webmaster logoGoogle Webmaster Tools allows you to do just that.

Open a new account with Google Webmaster (if you have a Google account, it will fasten the sign up process).

Add a new site to the Google Webmaster and you will be asked to verify the ownership of your site. This can be done easily by adding a meta tag on your index site. Alternatively, you can create and upload a html with the verification filename to your web server. Once done, click the "verify" button and your site will be verify instantly.

Next thing that you have to do is to submit your sitemap to Google so that the googlebot can crawl your site and index it faster. Make sure that your sitemap is fully compliant with the Sitemap protocol. If you are having problem with generating sitemap, you can use software like Google sitemap generator to do so. I have personally wrote a php script to automate the sitemap generation process. If you are interested to have a copy, do contact me.

There are four tabs at the top of the Google Webmaster Tools homepage
Google webmaster top tab

Diagnostic

This is where you can find out what is wrong about your web site. It will identify all your dead links and any url errors.
Under Diagnostic, you can access to:

* robots.txt analysis รƒฦ’ร‚ยขรƒยขรขโ‚ฌลกร‚ยฌรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œ this will show the status of your robots.txt file, whether it has been successfully accessed or rejected. At the end, you can choose to add extra spider bots such as googbot รƒฦ’ร‚ยขรƒยขรขโ‚ฌลกร‚ยฌรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œ mobile (for mobile content), googlebot รƒฦ’ร‚ยขรƒยขรขโ‚ฌลกร‚ยฌรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œ image (for image search), mediapartners-google (for Adsense content), and adsbot-google (for Adwords landing page) to crawl your site.
* Crawl rate: Set the crawling speed of the googlebot
* Preferred Domain: This is where you set the domain name that you want the search engine to show. Apparently, Google views url with and without the www differently. For example, "www.internetstrategyblog.com" and "internetstrategyblog.com" are viewed as two different urls, even though they are referring to the same website. To overcome this, Google allows you to specify your preferred domain and all traffic will be generated to one url only.
* URL removals รƒฦ’ร‚ยขรƒยขรขโ‚ฌลกร‚ยฌรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œ Occasionally, you may have removed a page from your site without updating your siteamp. When the googlebot crawls your site, it will return a 404 error for that page. The way to overcome this is to remove the url (dead links) from the Google Index database using this URL removal tool.

Statistics

This is really where you can find statistics about your website.

It is divided into 4 sections:

* crawl stats - This show you the pagerank of your website
* query stats - shows you the query for the page that is most often returned from your site.
* page analysis - Displays data on how each individual page performs for a keyword
* index stats - show the number of pages indexed in Google database.

Links

The Links tab allows you to find out all the incoming links to your site. Find out the incoming links to your site. It also displays the internal links structure within your site.

Sitemap

This is where you update and resubmit your sitemap.

Google Webmaster Tools is a very useful tool for analyzing your website and helps you to get rid of all the miscellaneous things that are going to hurt your ranking. Make good use of it to ensure your web site is in good health.
